This fundamentals program is designed to provide you with knowledge to effectively prepare and lodge customs declarations with ICUMS. On successful completion of this program, you will have a good understanding of customs processes and procedures, including import, export and special procedures. You will also gain a sound understanding of the core compliance areas of regimes, classification and valuation, and a good knowledge of import and export declaration procedures and requirements. By the end of the program, you should feel confident working in our ever-changing trade facilitation environment, be able to prepare customs declarations, and have a clear awareness of the resources available to you to effectively manage customs risk. You should also be able to master the soft skills of teamwork, self-management and customer service.

The Fundamentals in Customs Clearance consists of seven modules:

Customs Regimes and Procedure Codes
Customs Classification, Valuation Rules/Incoterms and Customs Offenses
Single Window Application and Exemptions
Integrated Customs Management System (ICUMS)
Self-Management / Teamwork and Problem Solving
Customs Duty and Tax Calculations
Designed to fit around a busy schedule, the program enables participants to upgrade themselves with practical knowledge and innovative e-learning tools including the use of the ICUMS Platforms; videos; examples; and step-by-step guides for putting the theory into practice.
What are the goals of this course?
By the end of the course Participants will be able to:
Identify relevant customs laws and their purpose
Explain key concepts underlying customs laws and regulations to Clients
Demonstrate a better understanding of the classification structure
Develop an understanding of the classification process
Identify the relevant codes required for particular processes and procedures including, but not limited to, Customs Procedure Codes
Identify the rules relating to customs valuation
Identify the meaning of terminologies used in the classification of goods
Demonstrate an understanding of the primary method of calculating the customs value of goods
Complete customs declarations for a range of scenarios
Appreciate the importance of teamwork and maintaining a positive attitude
Who is this course designed for?
This course is designed and tailored for both busy Clearing Agents / Freight Forwarders and also for those who are novices in the Customs Clearance Industry. The desire/overriding objective is to develop their appreciation of Customs Procedures to make participants effective and efficient in their Service delivery.

This highly-interactive course encourages participation through a combination of group discussion, practical exercises, videos, role-play sessions and team building activities. Participants will utilize best practices and benchmarking to model world-class training delivery. The training manual has been designed to be practical, easy to use, and facilitate learning.

Qualifications & Recognition
Upon successful completion of this program, students are eligible to receive a certificate of completion. This certificate would be recognized by the Ghana Revenue Authority (Customs Division).
Are there any prerequisites to enroll?
This course is recommended for people with:
- A strong desire to enter the Customs Clearance Industry
- Experience in the customs industry
- Basic computer skills
- A good command of the English language, both written and verbal
Duration
Weekend: Saturdays 9:30am – 3:30pm (Fundamentals program is for 6 Weeks).
How is the course delivered?
Classroom delivery consists of face-to-face training, including: tutorial/lectures, presentations, group discussions and case studies (where applicable). Independent study outside the classroom delivery is also required.
What are the course requirements?
- You can be a Newbie in the Customs Clearance Industry but you need to have a strong desire to learn new things. (Some knowledge and experience in the Customs brokerage industry is an advantage)
- Computer knowledge required, including how to navigate the internet
- Participants would be provided with notebook and pen. Participants to bring their own laptop where needed

Assessment
Assessment may be a combination of written assignments, tests, examinations and/or practical projects. Participants are required to attend tests and examinations as scheduled and must pass all assessment tasks to demonstrate both skills and knowledge competency in each unit.
