Customs Brokers Training Institute is a modern-day educational Institute that seeks to empower Customs House Agents/Brokers, Shipping Agents, Freight Forwarders and Logistics and Warehousing Practitioners with the requisite skills and knowledge to perform their functions effectively and efficiently as possible. The Training Institute will develop and deliver optimum world class training and education in the Customs Brokerage, Freight Forwarding, Shipping and Logistics Sectors.

A hallmark of the Institute is its unique focus on a teaching and learning model that is dynamic and apt and at the same time, guides hands-on practice in a professional setting. This will provide new knowledge and skills development for current and future Customs Brokers who are committed to personal development and also to improving their work activities. The Institute will serve as an incubator for innovative ideas and practices that will be tested and the results disseminated.

There is a need, throughout Ghana and West Africa for a results-oriented, knowledge based educational institution which caters for the academic and practical, hands-on experiential training of Custom House Agents or Brokers who serve as the interface between Revenue Authorities and the importers and exporters of products into and out of the country. As countries develop great expectations and dreams, it becomes more apparent that Customs and Trade facilitators and actors are equipped with the necessary skills and tools which would enhance their activities and reduce the rate of errors in their work to enhance the flow of business and trade activities.

Customs brokers generally act as an intermediary between traders and Customs in Customs clearance processes. Brokers’ knowledge of Customs laws and processes in addition to their work experience in the trade supply chain can be useful for both traders and Customs officials. While Brokers support traders by providing all necessary documentation and undertaking formalities related to cargo clearance. Customs brokers are also expected to maintain government interests by ensuring compliance with Customs and other regulatory requirements and the payment of appropriate duties and taxes.

Training of Customs brokers becomes necessary, with the ongoing Customs modernization and trade facilitation initiatives in line with international instruments such as the RKC and the SAFE framework of standards and the related initiatives like AEO programs, Coordinated Border Management, Single Window, ICUMS and the Customs Act (Act 2015).

Providing training support for Customs brokers plays a significant role in enhancing professional standards of Customs brokers by providing them with training that challenges their relevant knowledge and skills, while also teaching brokers new relevant knowledge/skills.

The mission of the Training Institute is to equip Customs Brokers and their affiliates with the relevant and requisite skills and knowledge to operate at maximum capacity and help facilitate customs and trade procedures to the betterment of the existing systems and structures.
